Holland:
Stories and images
by Jim Waldron
I reccomend to all my traveling pals that the most fun, and best experiences
occur when you spend a month or so in the same place. Three days just doesn't
cut it, which is what I spent in Amsterdam. And though I had a month's
worrth of fun and professional development, including giving a lecture,
I made very few images. Then again, I didn't have to pay for a single drink
during the visit. I guess short visits have their advantages too.
Stories
Aside from a woman conflicted
about defending her South African culture
you can ask me in person why I understand the joy of shopping here.

Amsterdam
Going into a new town with a camera in your pocket, and the wish to
give someone else an idea about what that city is like through your pictures
is difficult. I always feel completely empty when faced with this task.
In Amsterdam I only spent two hours walking around. I'd been to the city
before, which made the task easier, along with the fact that i suspect
nearly everyone has been to, or heard of the place. Instead of creating
some documentery about the place I instead decided to just look for interesting
shapes in this new environment. As far as cities go, there's lots to look
at in a small spece here, and my brief visit offered lots to take back.
